One of the great benefits of doing planks is you do not need any equipment, just a little bit of space. Planks build strength in your core, upper and lower body for a full body workout. It also improves flexibility by stretching the muscles and posture if performed regularly.




Planks engage all the major core muscle groups in the abdomen. We engage the core constantly every day when we lift, reach, turn and bend.  When our core strength improves, our everyday tasks will improve, we’ll feel stronger and our abdominal muscles will tighten up.  For those with disc issues, planks are safer than crunches because they don’t require flexion of the spine.



When engaging in strength training, your metabolic rate increases even when sedentary.  The muscles you strengthen by doing planks on a daily basis will ensure you burn energy even after you stop exercising.



Through strengthening your core you will also condition your entire trunk from the pelvic girdle to the shoulder girdle.  When these muscles are strong you should be able to maintain proper posture all the time. Good posture helps keep the vertebrae and ligaments of the spine healthy and aligned.



According to the American Council on Exercise, doing planks regularly not only significantly reduces back pain, but also strengthens your muscles and ensures a strong support for your entire back.



Planks will help strengthen your core muscles and give you the balance you need. It teaches your body to act as a unit and will boost your performance in your runs, hikes, cycling, and swimming and in every other kind of sporting activity.



As with most exercises, planks calm your brain and help reduce anxiety. Your muscles get tight after sitting all day long and tension develops in the neck and shoulders, by doing planks they will stretch out the muscles to release all that tension.
